Can anyone tell me how "rope binding" is made. This will be for a Weissenborn. I've done a "search" on this site and not found anything. Would like to try to make my own.
Thanks
David

There's some stuff over at the MIMF on the subject.
I've not made any myself (nobody has asked for it)
but essentially it's like a large, 1/2 herringbone. You
need a inner strip (usually a black line) to hold
everything together and if I remember right one
builder mentioned using an outer strip too, then
sanding/scraping it off after the bent binding is glued
to the channels.

I don't think I explained the rope process very much and I didn't have any pictures. Long story short... glue up a bunch of white and black veneers alternating color until you have a stack about 1/2" high, by 3' long and about 3" wide. Cut a bunch of parallelograms from this strip. They should look like this:

Then glue all the parallelograms together and cut strips off the side.

Once the strips are cut off, cut the thin ropes from the side of those and then thickness on the drill press sander, and that's it. I know this was down and dirty, but I didn't have any great pictures from the last time I did this.

Good luck!

John

John,

It would be hard to get any clearer than that! Thanks!

Oh yeah, one more thing I knew I forgot. Once you have the wide zebra looking piece ready to cut off the thin ropes, make sure you glue a very thin piece of black veneer on each side before you cut the ropes to clean it up and keep it from delaminating while bending. This will give you that nice clean black border on each side of the rope.

Cheers!

John
